This photograph shows Sub Lieutenant Kazimierz Sadowski (Andrew's father), first in his class at the Polish Naval Academy, receiving the Polish Navy Sword of Honour from Kontradmiral Jerzy Swirski, on the deck of ORP Bałtyk in October 1936. In September 1939, Kazimierz Sadowski was serving as the torpedo officer on submarine ORP Zbik and was interned in Sweden for the duration of the war (together with submarines ORP Sep and ORP Rys). |

Andrew's uncle, Lieutenant Bronislaw (Horodyski) Hackbeil was an officer on ORP Sep and was also interned in Sweden. This is his pre-war Polish Navy record. |

Polish Navy crew and submarines interned in Sweden during the September 1939 campaign. Kazimierz Sadowski, a Torpedo Officer in the Polish Navy on submarine ORP Zbik was interned in Sweden from 25th September 1939 until 5th December 1944. During his internment from 1st July 1940, until his arrest by the Swedes on 24th May 1943, he acted as Chief of Radio Intelligence secretly listening to German radio-telegraphic transmissions and messages from the underground in Poland and sending coded reports on to the Allied Command in England. |
