1PAD’s Battery of Death (Bateria Śmierci) Scotland 1943-44 This was the 1st Battery of the 1st Motorised Artillery Regiment, which was continuing the tradition of the 1st Mountain Artillery Regiment (1 Pułk Artylerii Górskiej) formed in 1918 (which became the 1st Motorised Artillery Regiment in 1931) and the bravery of its 4th Battery (4 Bateria) during the Battle of Dytiatyn on 16 September 1920. This was one of the battles of the Polish-Soviet War of 1919-1921 (also referred to as the Polish Thermopylae). The 4th Battery fought bravely for 6 hours with the 8th Mounted Red Cossack Division of the Red Army until it ran out of ammunition and was completely massacred by the Soviet mounted troops. By holding back the enemy for such a long time it sacrificed the lives of all its soldiers to save its parent 8th Infantry Division and the Ukrainian Cavalry Division. Altogether on that day some 240 Poles died. The 8th Mounted Red Cossack Division was destroyed a few days later near Tarnopol. To honour their bravery and sacrifice, Marshall Piłsudski named the 4th Battery as the “Battery of Death”, and in its memory this title was passed on to the 1st Battery. From then onwards soldiers of the 1st Battery were entitled to wear the skull and crossed bones badge on the right sleeve. The 4th Battery was also awarded posthumously the highest Polish military decoration - the Cross of Virtuti Militari (Krzyż Virtuti Militari). A monument was erected at the place of battle but was removed by the Ukrainian Authorities in 1986. Polish 1st Corps in Europe (Gen. Maczek)
